Dates to remember:
- Nov. 2-4, 2009 - External Advisory Board Meeting
- Nov. 3, 2009 - EAB Mini Symposium day - all PIs will present a talk
- Nov. 23, 2009 – NIH APR report due. Information
about reporting requirements will be forthcoming in early October 2009. Here
is a short list of items that will be requested about your research progress
during FY 09.
- COBRE/IDeA Annual Progress Report – 250 word lay abstract reviewing the
past year’s work
- Answers to research risk questions (is your IACUC, ORDA, IRB, etc. current
– I’ll need copies)
- Publications, presentations – copies of publications, citations for presentations,
etc. (Be sure to cite COBRE!)
- Biosketch – up to date
- Other Support information – separate from biosketch, including total costs,
direct & indirect and direct & indirect costs for only your portion of each
grant
- Grant submission data – funding agency, submission date, role, title,
pending/funded ($$ & dates), etc. – all grants, not just NIH
Program News:
- COBRE CCET members attended the biannual INBRE/IDeA conference in Washington DC on Aug. 6-8, 2008. Drs. Rathnam
Chaguturu and Benyi Li presented posters.
- COBRE Administrative offices, along with the HTS and Medicinal Chemistry core
laboratories, opened in SBCIII on KU's west campus on June 16, 2008. Office hours in the
new building are Tuesday and Friday, 8:00amto 5:00pm. The Malott office is open Monday, Wednesday
and Thursday 8:00am to 5:00pm. All contact information remains the same. Click on this link for

Building progress
- Fall/Winter 2009/2010 COBRE PI lunches have been set for the following dates. Lunches
are held from 11:30am to 1:00pm, place TBA. Menus will be sent out about a
week prior to the date. If you order a lunch and are unable to attend, please
call as late at 9:30am on the date to cancel.
- Friday Sept. 26 - speakers: Aube and Chaguturu on Medicinal Chemistry and HTS Cores
- Monday Oct. 19 - speaker: Mark Cohen; also preparation for COBRE EAB meeting
- Tuesday Dec. 8 - speakers: Jun Li/Aakeroy

- Thursday Feb. 18 - speakers: Kambhampati/Zhang; wrap-up of COBRE year
Core News:
Investigator Awards:
- Guoli Dai (First Award) has received a grant from the NIH for his project titled: Nrf2, Hepatocyte Proliferation, and Liver Regeneration. The project will be funded from April 1, 2009 to March 31, 2014. This award is a result of his COBRE research.
- Laird Forrest (Project Award) has received a grant from the ACS for his project titled: Targeted drug carriers for melanoma therapy. The project will be funded from July 1, 2008 through June 30, 2012. This work does not overlap his COBRE project.
- Laird Forrest (Project Award) has received a grant from the National Cancer Institute (1R21 CA 132033) for his project titled: Target polymeric nanocarriers for combination therapy of metastatic prostate cancer. The award is funded from Feb. 1, 2008 through Jan. 31, 2010 and does not overlap COBRE research.
- Paul E. Smith, First Award (Bossmann) 2006 has received an R01 from NIGMS (R01GM079277) titled: Accurate simulations of peptide aggregation which runs from 09/2007 - 08/2012. This project does not overlap COBRE research.
- Yoshiaki Azuma has received an RO1 from NIGMS titled “Regulation and function of PIASy mediated mitotic SUMOylation in vertebrates” with funding to begin approximately Aug. 1, 2007.
- Benyi Li, Laird Forrest and Grace Guo (Past PI) have each received $35,000 research awards from the Kansas Masonic Cancer Research Institute beginning June 1, 2007. Their research topics are: Benyi Li - "PI3K p110 beta inhibition for prostate cancer therapy"; Laird Forrest - "Shielded adeno-associated viruses for cancer gene therapy"; Grace Guo -"Mechanism of nuclear receptor FXR in repressing colorectal cancer".
- Snigdha Banerjee, KUMC, Project Award 2005, was recently awarded a Veterans Administration Medical Center grant for her research project on ‘Cell-Cell Interactions during Breast Tumor Angiogenesis: Role of NRP-1’.
- David Davido, KU, First Award 2006, has received a three year Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program IDeA Award for his research project ‘Identifying Targets of E3 Ubiquitin Ligases: Role in BRCA-1-mediated Breast Cancer’ starting May 1, 2007.

- Kristi Neufeld (Project Award 2002-2004) was selected for a Kemper Award
Aug. 26, 2008 and received $5000 in recognition of her teaching excellence
in the Molecular Biosciences Department. The W.T. Kemper Fellowships for Teaching
Excellence recognize outstanding teachers and advisers at KU as determined

- Sunil David (First Award 2003), assistant professor of medicinal chemistry,
was recently selected as a “Best Teacher” by the School of Pharmacy.
Following the honor, he was subsequently recognized at the annual meeting
of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy in Chicago as one of the
association’s Teachers of theYear.
- Lorena Passarelli (First Award 2001) was highlighted in a recent KSU press
